The Queen of Nothing begins with Jude, now Queen of Faerie, which of course no one knows about, living in the mortal world with her elder sister after being exiled from the fairy world by the wicked king Cardan. Now if Cardon is wicked or not is a matter of perspective. There was much hidden about his past that we get to in this book. An unloved child, it broke my heart when I was going through the whole section of his childhood. I want to talk about Cardon so much because I loved his character. I would love to have a book on his perspective as well. Though we get to see him through Jude’s eyes but I would love to know what was going on in Cardon’s head this entire time. And the he loves Jude is so selfless and pure. That was a huge turn of events where we find out why Cardon exiled Jude and meaning behind his riddle.
In the very beginning when Jude gets an opportunity to go back to Elfhame, which comes to her in an unexpected way from the hand of her twin sister Taryn, who needs Jude’s help in order to save her own life after committing a crime, and that’s how she returns to a different Elfhame than she remembered. Even if she was reluctant to renounce her rights and take revenge for Cardon’s betrayal, she was restless to return. The first encounter with Cardon and Jude, oh my god, it was so lovely to see Cardon head over heels in love with her. Then Madoc’s sudden entry creates another turn of events, totally not expected. The dynamics of the relationship between Jude and Madoc was always complex to comprehend though it could be relatable at the same time. It was epic to see her sisters defending her against their father aiming the arrows in his direction.
When a certain threat approaches Cardon, Jude doesn’t wait a second to decide to save his life and in process risk her own. Amidst all the betrayals, lies, conspiracies and danger their love stands tall.
With the war in preparation and the prophecy about Cardon in her way, Jude stays strong and defends with all her power to protect the ones she loves. Real test occurs when Cardon falls prey to the curse. You can see Jude breaking inside and yet standing her ground as the queen of Faerie. Though at one point I thought Jude will take the offer which must have been so tempting for the person she is but then it was all so satisfying at the end. It was one of the best books I have read.
